The Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial is in the commune Saint-Avold in the Moselle department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. According to the American Battle Monuments Commission, it covers 113 acres and contains the largest number of graves of our military dead of World War II in Europe, a total of 10,489. Most of the dead here were killed while driving the German forces from the fortress city of Metz, France toward the Siegfried Line and the Rhine River.
The cemetery, memorial and grounds are maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) which was created by the U.S. Congress in 1923. The ABMC maintains 26 permanent American military cemeteries and 30 federal memorials, monuments and markers around the world. The ABMC will allow photos for personal purposes.
