Calvary Catholic Cemetery was founded in 1886 with the purchase of 200 acre tract. The first official interment was in 1888, though their are graves with earlier dates. There were over 152,238 graves in 2008 recorded at the cemetery. The cemetery is owned and operated by the Catholic Cemeteries Association of the Diocese of Pitsburgh. The cemetery is the largest of the diocesan cemeteries. Today it includes two chapel mausoleums, a large garden crypt development, the exclusive Cardinal Wright Oratory crypts, a large priests' plot, and Shepherd's Rest, a mausoleum set aside for entombment of bishops of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
