  John Bridges Breazeale was born in Selma Alabama on July 27, 1899 to Albert Farley Breazeale and Virginia Alexander Breazeale. John joined the Navy in 1915. Two years later at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, it happened. There was a premature explosion from a Salute Gun. There was also a case of cerebrospinal meningitis. Either or both probably caused the rapid decay in Johns hearing. By the time he came back home to Meridian Mississippi, he was totally deaf and had been given an Honorable Discharge for Total Deafness. But deafness did not stop John...he enrolled in college in Jackson MS and went on to become a very well noted Newspaper Reporter throughout the south. John spent his entire life as a writer and wire correspondent for the leading News Organizations of his day. John married Jesse Owen and they produced many children. All of John's children went on to become prominent contributors to their communities. One of his daughters, Virginia, went on to become a noted writer in New York. One of his sons, John, became top alumni at the University of Kansas and has a wing of the school named after him. On being deaf, John was quoted as saying, "Being deaf is not silent...it is the worst racket a man could stand...like a hurricane blowing in both ears day and night."
