- Arita Dickinson Branscom
Aug. 28, 1922 — July 28, 2009
Arita Margie Dickinson Branscom, 86, of Salem and Sweet Home died Tuesday peacefully in her sleep due to pneumonia complications, surrounded by her loving family.
Arita was born in Merritt, B.C., Canada, to William and Margie (Cole) Blankenship. Omak and Disatel, Wash., and Kinzua, Talent, Quines Creek and Dollar Camp, Ore., were among the logging camps where Arita grew up. Her mother died in 1929 when Arita was in the second grade at Kinzua. Her freshman year of high school was at Grants Pass. Her remaining high school years were at Sweet Home, where she graduated in 1940.
She worked at White's Cafe, picked hops, worked at the Holley Store, clerked for Fairview Grade School, was helpmate to two wonderful husbands and was a great mother and grandmother. She married Paul Dickinson on Nov. 7, 1944, just before he shipped out for the Philippine campaign. They made their home in Sweet Home and the Fairview community, where they farmed and he worked in the logging industry until full-time travel with their Airstream trailer. They settled in Salem a year before Paul's death in 1980.
In 1988 Arita married Art Branscom. He preceded her in death in 1998. In 2003 she returned to Sweet Home to be with her daughter JoAnn until entering assisted living in Salem in 2006 to be near her daughter Paula.
She was also preceded in death by her father in 1975; brother Elvin "Wade," and grandsons Brian and Adam Partridge.
Arita is survived by son Bill Dickinson and wife Susan of Newport; daughters Paula Lauderdale and husband Rob of Salem, and JoAnn Partridge and husband Ed of Sweet Home; brother Wess Blankenship of Klamath Falls; half-sister Tina Johnston of Roseburg; stepmother Lelah Abbott of Talent; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home. The family greatly appreciates care given by Hospice Northwest and the staff of Tierra Rose assisted living community.
Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service of Salem is handling the arrangements.
