"Julius F. Sturgis, a Life-Long Resident of Lititz, Has Gone to His Last Rest
The announcement last Monday morning of the death of so well-known a citizen as Julius F. Sturgis cast a shadow of gloom over this community as the sad news was spread from mouth to mouth. He died at 1:30 o'clock A.M. Monday, at the age of 62 years, 7 months and 19 days. He began ailing about six weeks ago and took his bed only a few days before he died. His principal ailment was kidney trouble or Bright's disease, and when he took his bed he knew he would never again rise. He spoke frequently of his near death and made requests and gave directions as to what was to be done after he was gone.
Mr. Sturgis was a son of the late Jacob Sturgis and was born in Lititz February 15, 1835. He resided here nearly all his lifetime with the exception of several years in Lancaster and several winters in Florida. He learned bretzel [sic] baking with William H. Rauch while a young man and he has been engaged in the bretzel [sic] baking business for many years, being recognized everywhere as the veteran bretzel [sic] baker of Lititz and Lancaster county, his product being considered superior to all others, there being a large demand for it from all sections.
Mr. Sturgis was twice married, his first wife being Miss Sarah Lint. The following children survive from that union: Mrs. Scott Becker, Mrs. Thos. Keller, Walter, Nathan and William, of Lititz, and Mrs. Daniel Cohick, of Nazareth. His wife died twenty-one years ago. His second wife was Miss Sarah Oehme. She survives and also the following children: Mrs. Frank Bowman, Blanche, Julius, Lewis, Homer and Sarah, all of Lititz.
Nathan and Edwin, of Lititz, and Oliver, of Lancaster, are surviving brothers; his surviving sisters are Mrs. Darius Delbo, of Lancaster; Mrs. Samuel Delbo, of Lititz, and Mrs. George Smith, of Lebanon. Twenty-three grandchildren also survive.
He was first identified with the Moravian and subsequently with the Evangelical churches of Lititz, was a charter member of Lititz Lodge No. 253, Knights of Pythias, in which he took an active interest, and Lancater Lodge No. (87), I.O.O.F.
Mr. Sturgis was prominent in Republican politics and at the time of his death was deputy coroner. Although never enlisted, he served for a few days as a volunteer during the war.
The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon. The body reposed in a black cloth-covered casket and looked very natural. The floral offerings consisted of a pillow of roses by the children, a cross of roses, carnations and smilax by the employees, besides a number of other floral designs and bouquets by friends. The remains were interred in the Moravian cemetery and were in charge of the Lititz Lodge Knights of Pythias, and the pretty burial ritual of the order was used at the grave. The pall bearers were Charles Kreider, John Beck, William Nelson, Schuyler Hassler, J. G. Weltmer and Eugene Kreider. After the burial services the funeral cortege proceeded to the United Evangelical church, where the final services were held, conducted by Presiding Elder C. S. Haman of Reading, Rev. Christian Brown of Adamstown, and Rev. C. L. Moench of Lititz."
