- 1737, at the age of twenty-one, he married Elizabeth, the twenty year old daughter of the Reverend Johannes #27574739 and Margaret Naas. Johannes Naas, a cofounder of the German Baptist Brethren and formerly leader of their congregation at Crefelt, Germany, was now in charge of their branch in Amwell.
Henry and Elizabeth settled on land that was afterwards owned by his grandson, Henry Runyan. It lay across the King's Highway, now called "York Road" (or U.S. Route No. 202), in the present village of Ringoes. Landis added to the original holding from time to timeuntil he became possessed of at least three hundred acres. Besides farming he established the business of saddle making, employing several hands, and such was his reputation that customers came to him from as far away as Long Island, NY, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware. In 1750 Henry Landis built on his farm a story and a half, stone house with gambrel roof, which stands today on the east side of the road. It is not recognizable now, however, as a recent owner "modernized"it by- removing the wing that extended from the north end, altering the windows and covering the outer walls with stucco. It is said that the Sunday meetings of the Brethren were held in this house.
Elizabeth (Naas) Landis died in the summer or fall of 1753 and on March 6, 1754, Henry took a second wife, Catherine, daughter of Henry and Anne (Harley) Graff. He was eighteen years older than Catherine.
Johannes Naas was married twice, left one son and one daughter in Switzerland, and one daughter, Elizabeth, came to America with him. She married Hannes/Heinrich/Henry Landis, who finally united with the Church of the Brethren at Conestoga, Pa. Brother Naas’ body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Amwell, NJ but no stone marks his grave, until recently
Catherine, Henry's second wife, survived him. She also was buried in the Harley lot. Henry's children were :
