- Bernville, Jan. 12--Mrs. Mary Katie Ann, wife of Francis H. Zerbe, died at her home in Penn Township, Bernville R.D. 2. Mrs. Zerbe, aged 69, was active in county agricultural circles and at the time of her death was an honorary member of the Berks County Agricultural Assn.
In 1939, Mrs. Zerbe was selected to represent Berks County at a conference of the Association of Country Women of the World in London, Eng. She was chosen on the basis of being a woman typical of the rural life of Berks County.
She served on the board of the Berks County Agricultural Assn. from 1948 up until the time of her illness when she was made an honorary member. She and her husband were active for many years in the Berks Grange.
Mrs. Zerbe was a daughter of the late Franklin S. and Mary (Ernst) Bender. She was a member of Christ (Little Tulpehocken) Lutheran Church and its Sunday school. She was a life member of the missionary society of the church.
She was graduated in 1912 from the Christian Missionary Training Institute, Nyack, N.Y., and spent three years teaching and doing missionary work among the mountaineers of eastern Tennessee.
Mrs. Zerbe served as a member of the state board of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Pennsylvania Letter Carriers' Assn., and also held offices in the Berks County branch of the association. Her husband is a rural letter carrier.
Surviving, besides her husband, are three sons: Francis B. Zerbe, West Reading; Alvin S. Zerbe, West Leesport, and Henry F. Zerbe, Bernville; two brothers, Charles E. Bender, Bernville R.D. 2, and Harvey E. Bender, West Lawn; four sisters, Magdaline, wife of Robert Stoudt, Reading; Stella, wife of D. Clyde Eisenberg, Lincoln Park; Elsie, wife of Elmer Balthaser, Reading; Millie, wife of John Bensing, Reading.
All services in Frieden's Lutheran Church, Bernville, with the Rev. A. F. Kallenbach and the Rev. Dr. Frank W. Ruth officiating. The body will lie in state from noon until 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Interment in Christ (Little Tulpehocken) Cemetery with the Kirkhoff Funeral Home of Bernville in charge.
