• Notes

  2nd Lieutenant Pennington Howard Way was an observer (bombardier) in the 96th Aero Squadron during WWI. This Squadron was the first in the United States Air Service to have bombardment as its sole mission. The Squadron was based at Amanty, France. Way was in the first group of observers assigned to the Squadron on May 17, 1918, and flew on numerous bombing raids in a Breguet 14 bomber. Way died September 12 when, following a successful raid, the aircraft he was flying in crashed in flames near Commercy, France. 2nd Lieutenant Way and his pilot, Andre H. Gundelach, were the first members of the 96th Squadron to be killed by enemy action. Gravesite Details Entered service from Pennsylvania
