  Charles was a son of Karl L. Roth and Elizabeth Mattern Roth. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1867 and lived with his family in Pittsburgh, Pa. His father died when Charles was young, and he was raised by his mother's second husband Gottleib Panke. In 1892, Charles married Caroline Yorge, and they had two children—Carl Leonard and Margaret Elizabeth—before Caroline's death. At the time of the 1900 Census, Charles and his children were living with his widowed mother, Eliza Panke, at 306 Sample St. in Millvale, Pa. On Sep. 27, 1900, Charles married Louisa Kuhn, who lived at 335 Sample St., and they had three children—Violet Martha, John Kuhn and Mabel Mary. Louisa died in 1909, when the children were 7, 4 and 2. In 1910, Charles was a millwright in a packing company, and he and his five children were living at 432 Sample St. in Millvale. At that time he had a servant, Amelia Christina Zech Hellerman, who was born on May 20, 1869 in Prussia, and who became his third wife. In 1920, Charles and Amelia were living on Sample St., and Charles was a collector for Consolidated Ice Co.; and in 1930, they were living at 423 North Ave., and Charles had no occupation. Family members state that Charles was an "inventor" and a foreman in a pickle factory, but no evidence of this has yet been found. Charles died of a coronary occlusion, and is buried with his third wife, Amelia.
