  Chris Dickinson Research: BEWARE DOROTHY The marriage with Dorothy Wallace is not in the register, but does make sense. Dorothy was the illegitimate daughter of Thomas Wallace of Streetgate. If she married in 1609, she would have been 25. George would have been 20. The marriage was probably forced by pregnancy. George certainly had a legitimate daughter Dorothy baptised in 1610, though the mother's name isn't mentioned. George's brother Richard also had a daughter Dorothy in 1613, so an aunt named Dorothy as godmother would be convient. On its own this wouldn't be enough as a hypothesis; but there is the additional oddity of brother William's probate in 1614. George was administrator, and John Dickinson of Streetgate a bondsman. Why would John be a bondsman when there is no evidence of a formal family link between the Dickinsons of Streetgate and the Dickinsons of Fell Dyke? John may have felt some obligation as the owner of Streetgate, or out of friendship with Matthew Wallace, or if illegitimate Dorothy's mother was a Dickinson of Streetgate. Had George not married her, the girl would quite likely have remained a spinster as dowry-less and so a cost to the Streetgate households.
