- Salem - Lansing Bulgin, age 97, passed away December 2, 2018. Born Inglis Lansing Runyan, May 20, 1921, to Milton and Bess (Owens) Runyan in Portland, Oregon, he spent his early childhood in northeast Portland and attended Holladay School. On the occasion of his mother's remarriage in 1936, he took the name of Lansing William Bulgin and moved to Long Beach, California. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, class of 1939.
In 1942 he married Eleanor Parnell in Long Beach, California. He was a veteran of World War II attached to the Air Corps as a German linguist. He earned degrees in music from Linfield College and Indiana University, with post-doctoral study at the University of Southern California. He taught music at Pacific College (now George Fox University), Indiana University, Ft. Wayne Bible College, Northwest Nazarene College (now University), and Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University).
In 1965 he became Provost of the Associated Christian Colleges of Oregon, a three-college consortium in the Portland area. In 1972 he joined the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory as a planning specialist where he retired in 1984 as Personnel Officer.
In 1975, Bulgin established and developed Ellanhurst Gardens in Sherwood, Oregon, specializing in the propagation, growing and hybridization of rhododendrons. In 1996 he and Eleanor moved to Capital Manor in Salem. He was the director of the Capital Manor Choraleers from 2000 to 2007. He was a member of the Salem Westminster Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Jan Wood and son, Bud Bulgin; Grandchildren, Becky, Belinda, Beth Wood, Mark Bulgin and Jennifer Roth; Great-grandchildren, Isaac, Zachary, Andrew Bulgin, Josiah, Titus and Abigail Roth.
His celebration of life will be 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Capital Manor. Remembrances can go to Capital Manor Foundation. Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services.
