- William Gaston Hall, named for his paternal grandfather, was born Oct.15,1839 in Jackson Township, Handcock Co., Indiana the son of Dr. Richard Hall and Amanda Demarist Hall. They are found on the 1840 Federal Census for Hancock Co., In. which includes 2 yr. old brother Charles.
The family of four migrated to Iowa around 1843.
The 1850 Census for Tipton, Cedar Co., Iowa lists Richard, a 40 yr. old physician, his wife Amanda D. age 40, and sons Charles H. age 12 and William G. age 11. Also listed is William Gaston Hall, age 66 and born in N.J. (probably Richard's Father).
The 1856 Iowa State Census list Richard, a 40 yr. old druggist, Amanda 40, Charles 18 and William 16. The family is listed as living in Iowa for 16 years.
The 1860 Federal Census for Tipton, Iowa finds Richard, a 49 yr. old druggist with real property valued at $7,000. and personal property valued at $2,500. his wife Amanda 49, sons Charles 22 and William 20.
William G. Hall enlisted as a 21 yr. old resident of Tipton, Iowa on June 24,1861 as 2nd Corp. in Co. A, 5th Iowa Infantry. He had a tumultuous career in the army being reduced back into the ranks and put in the guardhouse for refusing extra duty on July 30,1862. After several courts martial and stints in the guardhouse, William finally deserted from the guardhouse at Germantown, Tn. on Jan.24, 1863. His latest sentence was read on dress parade Feb.3, 1863.
He evidently traveled out west because he is stated to have been at Rush Valley, 200 miles west of Salt Lake City in Aug. 1863.
William married Miss Lydia E. Dickinson at some point in 1865 (supposedly in Nevada) and had a son, Walter Richard, born in Oregon on April 28,1866.
The 1870 Census for Tipton, Ia. finds Lydia and Walter R. living with William's parents but his whereabouts are unknown. Lydia died at Tipton on Nov.4,1874.
William is said to have married a second time to Jennie Hamilton in 1871 and had three children with her, only one who survived childhood, a daughter Florence Rebecca born in Carson City, Nevada on July 2,1882.
William was employed as a carpenter and lived the rest of his life in Carson City. He filed for an invalid pension on Aug.5, 1912 with application # 1,405.301 but was never issued a certificate.
He passed away Jan.11, 1919 and was buried in Lone Mountain Cemetery, Carson City, Nevada.
