• Notes

  This is a cenotaph erected in 1935. The inscription on the top of the stone reads: Our dead are buried on the Daniel Brubaker farm at Buffalo Springs. These stones are erected here to perpetuate their memories. In fact, there are several stones still remaining in the Brubacher Cemetery at Buffalo Springs, but none for Daniel and Elizabeth Brubacher. Dates for Elizabeth and Daniel vary widely. Their years of birth and death are incorrect on the stone. Hannes Eby in his death and burial record published by the Lancaster Mennonnite Historical Society, gave a date of August 7, 1821, for Daniel and May 8, 1828, for Elizabeth. These are probably burial dates, as was Hannes Eby's custom, making Daniel's date of death around August 5, 1821, and Elizabeth's, about May 6, 1828. According to the Stauffer Bible, formerly owned by Amos K. Stauffer, Elizabeth was born October 1, 1765. Daniel, according to Brubaker family records was born April 15, 1762. This is consistent with the age of 59 years, 3 months given by Hannes Eby.
