- LeRoy E. Degler, 94, Sinking Spring, passed away December 3, 2010 at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Helen L. Degler (nee Lied) Degler to whom he shared 53 years of marriage. Born in Sinking Spring in 1916, he was a son to the late William D. Degler and Lillie M. (Hill) Degler, he resided in the area for his entire life. LeRoy graduated from Sinking Spring High School and attended the Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute, affiliated with Penn State University. He was the founder and President of Degler Whiting Company, until his retirement in the early 1960's. After retiring, LeRoy became very involved with Duplicate Bridge and quickly became a Life Master. He was also a deep-sea fisherman and a hunter. With his newfound time, cooking became his avocation. He was known to all his friends for his huge vegetable gardens and his generous sharing of the produce. LeRoy is survived by his only son. He is survived by a granddaughter and a grandson and 4 great-grandchildren. He had a special relationship with his niece Karen; as they always celebrated birthdays together. He was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence and Charles, and two sisters, Ruth and Elsie A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, at Lamm & Witman Funeral Home, Wernersville, with the Rev. Dr. Osborne Buchanan, Jr. officiating. A visitation with the family will be held from 10-10:30AM, Tuesday, at the funeral home. Inurnment is private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 498 Bellevue Ave., Reading, PA 19605 or to the Alzheimer's Association, Berks County Branch, 237 Court Street, Reading, PA 19601.
