• Notes

  A homeless vagrant who made a living selling stationery or whatever he could. His right arm was paralyzed, unknown if from war. On October 8 1869 he met Zach Snyder, alias John Deal, also a vagrant, and they walked around most of the day visiting several drinking establishments. Around 8 pm that day his would be friend, John Deal attacked him with a hatchet and he was brutally murdered. See John Deal/Zach Snyder memorial at St Peter's Cemetery, Berks, Pa. Richard Harlan's burial was not reported but in that period homeless and poor with no funds were dispatched to the Alms House for disposition.
