  From the words of his older brother Charles: After Jim's squadron leader was wounded and evacuated, Jim took over and ordered the rest of his squad to "get back up there and get the enemy soldiers!" After chasing the enemy into a cave, an unidentified gunner was setting up his machine gun when he looked over to see a live grenade land some feet away from him and the rest of the group. He then looked over to see Jim, in his bloodied uniform after being wounded in the stomach, ran and made the ultimate sacrifice by jumping onto the grenade right before it exploded. Despite some of the squadron losing their hearing as a result, Jim selflessly gave his life up, saving the many lives of his fellow patriots. "The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal James Edward Miller, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on October 27, 1970. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Lance Corporal Miller upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
