- Ephrata Review Friday September 20, 1901. Jacob R. Gockley, an aged resident departed this life on Saturday evening at 6 o'clock, at the home of his son Lemon Gockley, at 161 West Fulton Street, this borough. Death was caused by the infirmities of old age. The deceased was age seventy-seven years, eight months and eleven days. He was born near Durlach, being a son of the late Samuel and Polly Gockley. He managed a farm in Clay township. In 1882, he retired from farming and moved to the premises at present occupied by Isaac Stoner on the Academy Hill near Ephrata, after which he moved to the Cloister. Five years ago the deceased moved to this borough where he has resided ever since. His wife, whose maiden name was Catherine Adams, died on April 8, 1900. The deceased leaves the following daughters and sons to mourn thier loss: Mrs. David Habecker, of near Brunnerville; Mrs. Lizzie Fasnacht, of near this borough; Mrs. Henry Redcay, of near Bareville; Mrs. Daniel Keller, of this borough; Jacob of Brickerville; Lemon and Henry of this borough, and David of New Holland. John G. Gockley, of near Schoeneck, is a brother of the deceased; who also leaves two step-brothers in Cumberland county. The deceased had been a member of the Old Mennonite Church for a period of more than forty years. The funeral took place on Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock, from the home of his son, Lemon Gockley 161 West Main Street. Services were held at the Indiantown Mennonite Meeting House and Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Abraham Witmer of Masonville, Rev. Mr. Risser of near Brunnerville, and Rev. Mr. Buchter of near Clay officiated.
In the 1860 Earl Twp, Lancaster County, PA Census, there are six children of Jacob and Catherine listed: Martha, 9; Catharine, 6; Lemon, 5; Twins - Samuel and Ezekiel, 3; and Henry, 1. Note that their son Israel is not listed and would have been three years old at the time. Could it be that the census taker misunderstood and wrote "Ezekial" rather than "Israel." In the 1870 Clay Twp, Lancaster County, PA Census there are the following children listed: Jacob, 19; Catherine, 19; Lemon, J L, 15; Henry, 11; and David, 5. Neither of the twins nor Israel are not listed in this census and Israel had died in 1864.
