The son of Philip Gerhart & Mary (Erisman) Metzger, in 1860 he was a shoemaker living in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 4" tall and had black hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private with Co. K, 1st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861. He then enlisted in Lancaster September 17, 1861, mustered into federal service there September 24 as 5th sergeant of Co. Co. K, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. Falling ill, he was left behind at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, June 24, 1863, furloughed home, and then charged $34.72 - about two months' pay - for transportation. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 25, 1864, in Philadelphia, promoted to 2nd lieutenant April 23, 1865, at Martha's Vineyard, North Carolina, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865.
Me married Margaret Humphreville in 1867 and fathered Ann Catharine "Katie" (b. 12/18/67), Gerhart Cyrus (b. 04/29/69), Henry Klopp (b. 11/08/70), Oscar P. (b. 02/07/72), Margaret Louisa (b. 11/15/74), Mary Elizabeth (b. 12/17/76, d. 07/30/77), and Philip (b. 08/03/79). He died in Lancaster General Hospital of "cardio-vascular and renal disease with decomposition."
