Nathaniel Newlin, Jr., born 19 Mar 1690, was the son of Nathaniel Newlin and Mary Mendenhall. He was born in Concord, Chester, Pennsylvania.
He married Jane Woodward, daughter of Richard and Jane Woodward, of Middletown, in 1710/1711, in Concordville, Concord Township, Delaware, Pennsylvania. She was born on 13 Apr 1687 in Thornbury Township, Chester, Pennsylvania. She died in Feb 1737 in Middletown Township, Chester (actually Delaware), Pennsylvania.
He served in the Provincial Assembly for a number of years as a representative of Chester County. He resided at Concord, where he died in Feb of 1731/2.
They left 9 children - Nathaniel, Joseph, Nicholas, Nathan, Rachel, Elizabeth, Jane, Mary and Martha

NATHANIEL NEWLIN
Born in Ireland, 1665, died 1729; A member of this Meeting,, served in the Assembly of the Province during fourteen sessions, 1698-1722; sat as a Justice in the Courtns of Chester at various terms, 1703-26; Founder of Newlin Township on the Brandywine 1724, and his wife, Mary Mendenhall Newlin, who came from Wiltsire, England, with her brothers. Joined this Meeting and was here married in 1685.
This marker was placed here in 1916 as a record by the descendants, Lewis Palmer and William C. Sproul.
- Nathaniel was a political leader and for many years represented Chester Co, PA in the Provincial Assembly.
Following is the marriage certificate of Nathaniel and his wife:
Whereas I, Nathaniel Newlin, Jr of Concord in the county of Chester and province of Pennsylvania, son of Nathaniel and Mary Newlin also of Concord and Jane Woodward, daughter of Richard and Jane Woodward of Middletown in the county and province aforesaid, having declared their intentions of marriage before several monthly meetings of the people called Quakers held at Providence in the county and province aforesaid according to the good order used amongst them those proceedings therein after a deliberate consideration thereof and having consent of parents and relations concernedtheir proposal of marriage was allowed by the said meetings.
Now these are to certify those it may concern that for the full accomplishing their said intentions this first day of the second month in the year one thousand seven hundred and eleven, they the said Nathaniel Newlin and Jane Woodward appeared in a public meeting of the said people at their public meeting house in Middletown and the said Nathaniel Newlin taking the said Jane Woodward by the hand did in a solemn manner openly declare that he took her the said Jane Woodward to be his wife promising through divine assistance to be unto her a faithful and loving husband until death should separate them.
And then and there in the said assembly the said Jane Woodward did in like manner openly declare that she took him the said Nathaniel Newlin to be her husband promising through divine assistance to be to him a loving and faithful wife until death should separate them and moreover they the said Nathaniel Newlin and Jane Woodward, she according to the custom of marriage assuming the name of her husband as a further confirmation thereof, did then and there to these presents set their hands.

Following is Nathaniel's will:
Be it remembered that I, Nathaniel Newlin of Concord in the county of Chester in the province of Pennsylvania, yeoman, being in good health of body and of sound and perfect mind and memory, praise be given therefore to almighty God, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say:
First and principally, I commend my soul into the hands of almighty God who gave it and my body to be decently buried by my executors hereafter named and as concerning such estate as it has pleased God to bestow upon me, I give and dispose thereof in manner and form following:
First, my will is that all my just debts be truly paid by my executor hereafter named as soon as conveniently may be after my decease together with my funeral expenses
Item. I give and bequeath to my loving wife, Jane Newlin, and to her use and occupation the new stone house I now dwell in and such necessary furniture to the same as my executor may see fit and convenient and also one feather bed and its furniture also one other bed that was my fathers during her widowhood and she to give it to one of my daughters as she shall see convenient. Also it is my will that my said wife take the profits of my plantation during the non age of my son, Nathaniel, for and toward the bringing up of my younger children.
Item. I give to my said wife the sum of £100 money of this province to be paid to her by my executor out of my personal estate within some convenient time after my decease.
Item. It is my will that my executor allow my wife one hundred and fifty pounds of beef and pork yearly during her widowhood also I give to my said wife my riding horse and her saddle with free pasture in the summer and fodder in the winter for him. Also I give her two cows to be kept as aforesaid and also firewood as necessary, cut and brought to her clear of charges. Also £5 toward the finishing my said stone house which said bequests are with what followeth to be in full right of dower and thirds which she might or could claim by any law or custom of this province.
Item. I give to my son, Nathaniel Newlin, his heirs and assigns my plantation where I now dwell with two hundred seventy five acres of land inclusive at the west end of my said tract together with all houses, out-houses, barns, stables, orchard, thereunto belonging, except as before excepted, to be by him enjoyed at the age of twenty one years and then my will is that he provide for his mother during her widowhood above, the quantity of beef and pork, fodder and pasture and firewood yearly and every year during her widowhood as aforesaid.
Item. I give to my son my four working horses with their harnesses also my cart, plow, harrow, and their ____erns. Also I give my said son, two steers and three pair of gold buttons to him and his heirs.
Item. I give my son, Joseph Newlin, four hundred acres of land being part of a tract of land lying in township of ____ in the county aforesaid to him and his assigns forever to be taken off that side next to the land of Henry Hayes.
Item. I give my said son £20 out of my personal estate, also one set of vest and breeches with buttons of silver also the gun that was his grandfathers to be enjoyed by my said son at the age of twenty one years. Also I will that my said son be, by my executor at the age of sixteen, put out to apprentice.
Item. I give to my son, Nicholas Newlin, four hundred acres of land being part of seven hundred eighty five acres on Doe Run in this county of Chester to be laid out by my trustees whom hereafter I shall appoint, to him, his heirs and assigns. Also I give to my said son the sum of £20 money of this province to be paid by my executor when he shall arrive to the age of twenty one. Also I give my said son the other gun and likewise to be put to apprentice at the age of sixteen and be capable to enjoy all and every of his legacies at the age of twenty one.
Item. I give to my son, Nathan Newlin, one hundred twenty five acres of land being part of my home tract to begin at the corner next to Thomas Broom's and Ralph Evenson's thence to the run in the meadow and fifteen perches over the said run and then down the same to complete the said quantity to him, his heirs and assigns. Also I give to my said son the sum of £25 money of this province out of my personal estate also my will is that my watch be sold and the money arising therefrom by my executor put out at interest for the use of my said son, Nathan, also it is my will that he at the age of sixteen be put out to apprentice and be capable to enjoy his whole legacy at the age of twenty one years.
Item. I give to my daughters and each of them, viz: Rachel, Elizabeth, Jane, Mary, and Martha the sum of £50 lawful money of this province to be by them and each of them, enjoyed and possessed at their respective ages of eighteen but if any or either of my said daughters die or marry without the consent of executor, then my will is that such disobedient daughter shall have but 1s and their respective share be divided as well as such dying child, equally among the survivors. Also my will is that they have their said ____.
Item. My will is that the remaining parts of my personal estate as well as my land not disposed of be sold by my executor and the money arising therefrom be put out to interest and the interest be applied toward the bringing up my said children to their respective ages or apprenticeship and after to go to my estate and be added to their several shares except the sum of £5 for the schooling of the first eight of my children and £2 for the schooling of my son, Nathan.
Item. I give unto my son, Nathan Newlin, the full rent that shall and will arise from that place that William Ford doth now live on during the natural life of the said William Ford and his wife to be recovered by my executor and put out for his use, but if William doth not pay it, then he is to be dealt with with according to the directions of the lease and when the two, William and his wife, shall depart this life, then the whole place is to go to my son, Nathan Newlin.
Lastly, I constitute, ordain and make my loving wife, Jane Newlin, and Edward Woodward of Middletown, yeoman, executors and Ellis Lewis and John Newlin, trustees to this my last will giving them full power to perform all and everything therein contained as well as for disposing of my personal estate and for the conveying of the remaining part of my land not before disposed of.
In testimony thereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this tenth day of January, Anno Domini 1731.
