  Karl (Charles) Peters - Prominent Business Man in Greenup Karl Peter was born in 1824 in Oss, Amt Baden, Grofsherzogthum Baden , Germany, bearing allegiance to the Duke of Baden . He was the son of Ignatz and Marian Zip Peter. Emigrated from Havre de Grace March 29, 1849 and arrived in New York City May 12, 1849 (age 25). Filed declaration of intention of U.S. citizenship on Oct. 11, 1852 in Jefferson Co. Indiana. Married Margaretha Stonebarger at Osborn, Ohio on March 25, 1852. Became a member of Oddfellows Lodge in Madison, Indiana in 1856 .Was a stagecoach driver in Indiana and Ill- between Greenup and Vandalia with a mail contract during the Civil War He was an early pioneer of Greenup (arriving in 1857). In 1858, the Greenup Tax List shows Charles owned four town lots. He is listed in 1860-1870 census as a cabinet maker. His first business (Furniture/Undertaking) was located on the southeast corner of the square in Greenup. In 1874 he tore down an old lodge building on south side of Cumberland St. and put up a new frame building for his combined business. When it burned, a brick building was built which was known as the Peters Building and is still standing. This business was taken over by his son Ed (about 1889) who was also an undertaker. Ed sold the family business in 1899. The Charles Peters family lived in south side of Greenup. He was elected to the village board several times and served as a school trustee. He was a Democrat and served twelve successive years as Cumberland County Coroner. He was a zealous member of the Odd Fellows Fraternity and a charter member of the lodge in Greenup. Charles was buried in Greenup, Illinois-Jan 12, 1898. Margaretha Stonebarger, daughter of Adam and Sarah Zug Stonebarger was born March 8, 1820 in Charleston . PA. Died in Greenup, Illinois. After marriage they resided in Aurora and Terre Haute, Indiana and then moved to Greenup in 1857. They were members of the German Baptist Church commonly known as Dunkards. In Greenup they were members of the Univeralists Church. The family name was probably changed to Peters after the arrival of Karl Peter in this country Other children of Charles and Margaret Peters: Emma Peters Winslow (fifth child out of five) b.
