- Willis Haverstock Hackman died on November 26, 2016 in Memphis. A 51–year resident of Clarksville, Tennessee, he taught for 32 years at Austin Peay State University and was Emeritus Professor of Music.
A musicologist and trombonist, he was born and raised in southeastern Pennsylvania where he enjoyed an early career playing trombone in area swing bands and community concert bands, then for about 40 years he played variously in orchestras and bands in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Birmingham, Alabama and Nashville, Tennessee. He served in the United States Air Force as a bandsman in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and St. Johns, Newfoundland.
He began his collegiate education at Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pennsylvania and held degrees from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (B.M.), School of Music, Indiana University (M.M.) and Peabody College, Vanderbilt University (PH.D.). The author of a number of articles and papers on music analysis and criticism, theory and history, he was an active member of the American Musicological Society and the Society for Music Theory; a National Endowment of the Humanities fellow at the Eastman School of Music and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a life member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, from which he received the fraternity's Orpheus Award.
Born May 28, 1928 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to Lawrence Huber Hackman and Ruth Haverstock Hackman, he was preceded in death by his son, Dana Bernat Hackman, his granddaughter, Lane Currie Hackman, and his sister, Audrey Hackman Wright.
He is survived by his beloved companion and wife of 66 years, Joanne Bernat Hackman, also a musician and teacher, who shared his enthusiasm for music, literature and theatre, and who condoned his preoccupations with history and philosophy; by his son, Bela Bernat Hackman MD (Nan Nunes Hackman) and his daughter, Dawn Hackman Redmond (David), both of Memphis; his grandsons, Dustin David Redmond, Midland, Texas; Will Nunes Hackman (Rebecca Koftan Hackman), Wheaton, Illinois; Nicholas Dale Redmond, Memphis; and Leeds Currie Hackman, Tallahassee, Florida; his grandaughters Olivia Hackman Barker(Evan), Wheaton, Illinois; and Brittany Redmond Hawk (Adam), Memphis; along with his four great granddaughters, Dana Hackman, Svea Barker, Camille Hackman and Sylvie Barker, all of Wheaton, Illinois.
He also is survived by his nephews, Richard Wright, Timothy Wright, and niece, Patrice Wright Dennison, New Jersey.
