  The son of Ellis Passmore & Sarah Ann (Hilaman) Kirk, in 1850 he was living with his family in Cecil County but by 1860 they were living on a farm in East Nottingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service: 1. Enlisted in Harrisburg June 30, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service there July 2 as a private with Co. D, 1st Battalion (Moson's) Pennsylvania Militia Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company August 21, 1863. 2. Enlisted in Lancaster July 14, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 17 as a private with Co. C in the hundred-day organization of the 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 4, 1864. He married Elmira Cook December 27, 1865, in Cecil County and fathered Willis Linwood (b. 01/09/67), Ella C. (b. 07/08/68), Harriet F.
