- Linda Stewart 61, born Linda Louise Lewis of Billings, passed away peacefully in her home Sunday evening Sept. 22, 2013, with her loving husband at her side. She was born on May 15, 1952, in Butte, Silver Bow County, Mont. to Dorothy E. and Harvey A. Lewis.
Raised and educated in Montana, Linda attended Sherman School in Walkerville. She also attended Butte High School where enjoyed chorus and volleyball. On February 26, 1971,, she married Jerome (Jerry) Challeen in Butte and had one son, Erik, in 1974. Together they lived in Silver Bow and then moved to Elko, Nev., before returning to Butte in the spring of 1980. They moved to Walkerville, and were fortunate to find a place just down the street from Linda's parents. Later they moved out by the Bert Mooney Airport. Linda was a devoted wife and mother, and her family was the most important part of her life. Her husband, Jerry Challeen, passed away Aug. 1, 1986. Linda went back to school at the Vo-Tech school in Butte to learn bookkeeping and accounting so that she could provide for her and her son.
Linda met her David Stewart of Butte in 1987 and moved to Billings, Mont., in the summer of 1988. They married May 4, 1990, in Billings. They remained best friends and constant companions until her death.
Linda worked as a bookkeeper / accountant for 12 years at Empire Steel until retiring in 2012. She loved growing roses, genealogy, and was very active in various eagle-watching communities on Facebook. Those communities considered her an adopted sister. She loved all her family very much, but was especially fond of her four granddaughters, Kaylee (11) and Kiara (7) Roberts, Anneka Challeen (6), and Hope Stewart (3).
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Roger Eugene Lewis.
Survivors include her husband, David Stewart of Billings, son and daughter-in-law, Erik and Melissa Challeen of Highlands Ranch, Colo., step-daughter and son-in-law, Dori and Scott Roberts of Butte, and step-son Scott Stewart of Butte. She is also survived by relatives Russell and Linda Lewis of Vallejo, Calif., Donald and Cindy Lewis of Montesano, Ore., Lance and Michelle Lewis of Walkerville, Diana Noll of Helena, Mont., Marian and Lynn Johnson of Owasso, Okla., and Rhonda Richards and John Nelson of East Helena, Mont. She is also survived by her father-in-law, David Stewart Sr.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carol and Sonny Philp; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept., 28, in the Duggan Dolan Mortuary, 1805 Meadowlark Lane, Butte.
Interment will follow in Mount Moriah Cemetery
