- Benjamin G. Binns, 68, president of the First National Bank and Trust Company at Donora for many years previous to its purchase by the Mellon National Bank and Trust Company, died at his home, Country Club Road, near Monongahela at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, August 29, 1953.
Mr. Binns had gone to the late residence of Arnold O. Farquhar, a close friend and associate who had died earlier in the day, to call upon Mrs. Farquhar. He was stricken a few hours later while spending the evening quietly at his home.
Mr. Binns had been closely associated with business and community affairs in Donora for almost half a century. He was born at Redstone, Fayette County, on December 19, 1883, a son of William and Elma Cope Binns. Locating in the district as a young man, Mr. Binns had spent all his years in Carroll Township and Donora.
The First National Bank of Donora grew under his leadership and he remained as a member of the Advisory Board when it was taken over by the Mellon National Bank and Trust Company. He had continued in the real estate and insurance business there.
In Donora, he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Community Chest Board, the Community Library Association and had served on the borough council.
Mr. Binns was president of the Board of Trustees of California State Teachers College and a member of the board of directors of the Charleroi-Monessen Hospital Association. Likewise, Mr. Binns had been very active on the county level in banking and district affairs, due to his widespread interests and recognized ability.
Socially, he was a member of the Monongahela Valley Country Club and the Masonic Fraternity, the Blue Lodge of Donora, Consistory of Pittsburgh and Syria Temple, Pittsburgh.
He leaves his wife, Ethel Carrick Binns; one son, John Scott; one grandchild, Susan Jayne Scott of Waukegan, Illinois; and two brothers, James G. Binns of Adrian, West Virginia and David H. Binns of Fayette County." The Charleroi Mail, August 31, 1953
