- Edith L. Howard, 90, of Gravois Mills, Missouri, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach, Missouri. She was born August 29, 1912 west of Lacey, the daughter of Fred and Inez Mitchell Bishop. On March 12, 1929, she was united in marriage to Elvan (Russ) Howard at Oskaloosa, and he died September 9, 1993. Together they farmed near Lacey until moving into Oskaloosa in 1950. She worked at Rolscreen Company (now Pella Corp) for over 16 years until retiring in 1973. Edith was a longtime member of the Oskaloosa Lady Eagles; the American Legion Auxiliary; and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, crocheting, and crossword puzzles.
Edith is survived by 2 sons: Curtis (& Dorothy) Howard and Royden Howard, all of Oskaloosa; 2 daughters: Lavoe (& Roy) Worrall of Gravois Mills, Missouri and Karen (& Ed) Smith of Slidell, Louisiana; 13 grandchildren: Bonnie & Rodney Ongna, Linda & Dick Reese, Vicki & Jim Barnett, Jeff & Pam Howard, Randy & Jacque Howard, Tony Howard, Chad & Christine Howard, Jackie & Mike Minter, Patti & Todd Heinle, LeeAnn & Dan Dickey, Stacy & Brent Brown, Gina & Keith Short, and Ashley & EJ Vail; 29 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren: Greg & Peg Ongna and Drew, Colby, and Kade; Andy & Kelly Albertson and Andrew, Bailey, and Levi; Jodie & Mike Seitz and Rachel; Shelli & Dwight Teeter and Wyatt; Jamie & Pat Nienkerk and Kierstyn; Rena & Bob Shepherd and Jacob; Lacy Howard; Taylor, Alexis, and Paige Howard; Elisha Thomas; Trenton Howard; Kailee & Zach Howard; Trish & Rob Brewer and Grace and Emma; Bill & Holly Ver Schuure and Andria, Billy, and Bo; Ian, Rhea, Kierren, and Brenna Heinle; Terra Walker and Jonathon and Warren; Tory Walker; Trevor Allison; Mary Brent and Beverly Brown; Peyton, Hannah, and Hampton Short; and Jack Veil; and a sister: Ila Vehmeier of Alamogordo, New Mexico; and nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Edith was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter: Vivian Louise Howard; a great grandson: Steve Ongna; a brother: Floyd Bishop; and 3 sisters: Thelma and Retha Malloy, and Nita Marshall.
Funeral services for Edith Howard will be held Saturday, July 5, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery at New Sharon. Visitation will begin Friday after 10 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Friday from 4 – 6 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the family.
