{10 Apr 2021: Biography of John by distant Piersol relative, Grant Collar, b.1931:
John Monroe COURTNEY was a son of Michael COURTNEY and wife Grace PEIRSOL/PIERSOL, who were married 17 Apr 1834 in Jackson, Trumbull County, Ohio. Grace was buried (1897) Stevenson Cemetery, Greenville, Mercer County, PA; but Michael's 1846 burial was unknown to this writer (no FAGM found for him on 20 Dec 2020).
John was born 03 Mar 1840 Trumbull, Ashtabula County, Ohio, died 18_Sep_1916 Los_Angeles, California, buried Angelus Rosedale Cemetery, Los_Angeles, m1: to an unknown spouse who reportedly died 1880 of cancer; m2: 15 Feb 1885 Cherryvale, Montgomery County, Kansas to Florence_C. WILLIS, born 04_Jun_1862 Illinois, died 11_Nov_1942 Los_Angeles, cremated by Angelus Rosedale Cemetery Crematorium.
Incidental fact from both 1850 and 1860 Census images: John had a twin brother, Joseph Jefferson COURTNEY, which is important for identification of the correct John Monroe COURTNEY, as there was another man with the same names and 1840 year of birth in a nearby Ohio county (no known kinship).
John was a Civil War Union Veteran of Company I, 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry (military service per original FAGM creator: Shiver). John was an Army Invalid. Beginning at his death, his wife, Florence, drew a widow's pension until her 1942 death.
John arrived about 1880 in Cherryvale, Montgomery County, Kansas. In partnership with attorney James Wharey WILLIS, they started a real estate business that was very successful. John married his partner's daughter, Florence, and they had two children:
1. E.C.M. or Berlin COURTNEY (a son), born Jan 1886 Cherryvale (No FAGM found on 21_Dec_2020). This son reportedly disappeared 1914 and was never heard from again.
2. Rhea Y. COURTNEY, born 15 Sep 1895 Cherryvale, died 02 Sep 1963 Los_Angeles, buried Angelus Rosedale Cemetery, Los_Angeles. Death Certificate data: died at home (1150_West_36th_St, Los_Angeles), was a private stenographer/typist, divorced and reverted to her maiden name, cause of death: heart failure, etc.
The family moved to Los Angeles soon after the 1900 Census. In the 1910 Census, John was still listed as a real estate agent.
