- Richard C. Wenrich, Wernersville, PA, husband of Ione (Livinghouse) Wenrich, died on Monday, September 5, 2011.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1947, and after basic training joined the armed forces in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge in Germany, with the 84th Infantry Division. He earned the following medals during his U.S. Army career: Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Bronze Star (Triple) attachment, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with German Clasp, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Born in Wernersville, he was a son of the late Charles F. and Mary L. (Ruth) Wenrich.
After graduating from Wernersville High School, he entered the U.S. Army. He attended McCann School of Business in Reading after his discharge.
Mr. Wenrich served as the Wernersville Postmaster from 1953 until his retirement in 1985. He started his postal career in 1948 as a clerk in the Wernersville Post Office. During his career he saw many changes in the mail service in Wernersville. Mail trains to trucks. Mail delivery to the house holds in Wernersville and surrounding areas, with city delivery service being established in 1954.
He was the Postmaster when the post office was moved from Penn Avenue to the site on Stitzer Avenue in 1958. He submitted several suggestions that were adopted by the Postal Service nationwide.
Richard also became very active in the National Association of Postmasters of the United States and in 1961 hosted the Pennsylvania Chapter of National Association of Postmasters of the United States convention at the Galen Hall Hotel with over 400 Postmasters in attendance. In 1972, he was elected Editor of the Pennsylvania Chapter publishing a monthly Postmaster's magazine. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1985. During his tenure as Editor, he also served on the National NAPUS Daily Bulletin Committee and was the chairman of this committee from 1982 until 1989, publishing The Daily Bulletin at the national conventions of the Postmaster's organization.
Mr. Wenrich is a life member of the Citizens Hose Company of Wernersville and a former Fire Policeman. He is a life member of the Berks County Fire Police Association and a life member of the Bally Fire Company. He is also a VFW member of Post 6558, Womelsdorf, PA, and serves on the Board of Directors and was a member of the former Wernersville Post 6668, and the Cloister Post 429 of the American Legion, Ephrata, PA, 84th Infantry Division Railsplitter Society, a Life Member of the Lebanon Valley Sportsmen Association and the Reading and Berks Basketball Old Timers.
He along with his wife are members of the Heidelberg Heritage Society, The Tulpehocken Heritage Society and the Historical Society of Berks County. Richard served on the Consistory of the First Reformed Church in Wernersville for six years.
He is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Ione (Livinghouse) Wenrich, formerly of Robesonia, his son's family, John R. Wenrich, Ph.D. of Dublin, VA, and his wife, Cindy, and their children: John, Jr. of New York City and Shara & Chip Beatty and son, Bruton of Charlotte, NC, and their daughter's family, Ione Laffey of Wildwood, NJ, and her children, Megan of Philadelphia and Bill of Wildwood, NJ.
Also surviving are a brother, Franklin of Wernersville, and a sister, Ruth Miller of Wernersville.
Services will be held on Monday, September 12, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. in the Lamm & Witman Funeral Home, Wernersville. Burial will be at the U.S. Military Cemetery, Indiantown Gap, PA. Friends are invited to call Monday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
