Ellen R. Hiester, retired elementary school teacher and former store owner, died June 19 at 7:55 a.m. in Reading Hospital.
Hiester, 90, Tulpehocken Township, was predeceased by her husband, Russell J. Hiester, on Sept. 30, 1996.
She died four days after she was injured in a two-vehicle accident in Heidelberg Township, police said. No death certificate was issued. The death is under investigation.
Hiester was employed as an elementary teacher in Oley Valley School District from 1938 to 1948 and in the Strausstown building of Hamburg School District from 1956 to 1962.
Hiester and her husband owned and operated Hiester's General Merchandise Store, Oley, from 1946 to 1956 and Hiester's General Merchandise Store, Rehrersburg, from 1956 to 1978.
Born in Oley, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Sallie (Rothenberger) Angstadt.
Hiester was a graduate of Oley High School and Kutztown Normal School.
She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Rehrersburg; the Rehrersburg Lionettes and the Rehrersburg Fire Company. Hiester was a life member of Conrad Weiser Chapter 449, Order of Eastern Star, Womelsdorf.
Surviving are two daughters, Sally R., wife of John H. Lesher, Bethel Township, and Mary Ann, wife of Ronald D. Rhode, Tulpehocken Township; and a son, Norman J., husbandof Debra S. Hiester, West Milton, Ohio.
Other survivors include seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Daniel Angstadt, and by a sister, Sarah Gilmer.
Memorial services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Trinity Church, P.O. Box 111, Rehrersburg, PA 19550. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the church, with services conducted by the Conrad Weiser chapter OES at 10:15 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Hill Funeral Home, Rehrersburg, is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the church at the above address.
