"Death of Monroe C. Hackman.
Monroe C. Hackman, a highly respected citizen of Akron, died at his home on Monday at 11:30 o'clock, after a brief illness, caused by an attack of tonsillitis, having, however, been a great sufferer from rheumatic trouble for the last twenty years, being totally helpless for about nine years. He was aged forty-six years and five days. Mr. Hackman was born at Millport, now Disston, Warwick township, being a son of Peter C. and Elizabeth Hackman, formers at that time on the Musselman farm. He went to Akron about twenty-five years ago and engaged in cigar packing for the E. Wolf & Co. firm, at Akron. In 1894 he married Susie Huber, of near Kissel Hill, who together with the following children survives: Lawrence H., a clerk in the Farmers' National Bank, Ephrata; Ella E., employed at the Brethren Home, Neffsville, and M. Huber, at home; also, the following brothers and sisters: Reuben, clerk in the W. B. Buch store; Henry C. a cigar packer; Lizzie, wife of Rev. s. N. Wolf; Mary, wife of Benjamin H. Badorf, and Laura, wife of Wayne c. Roland, besides a host of friends and acquaintances. In 1894 Mr. Hackman formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Mr. Wolf, in the cigar manufacturing and leaf tobacco business, which they conducted very successfully for about eighteen years.
When the firm dissolved, Mr. Wolf continuing, Mr. Hackman bought out the hardware business of G. A. Kemper, and opened up a new store, but rapidly failing health caused him to sell out to Mr. Harry W. Hess, and retire completely incapacitated. He served for one term as assessor of Akron borough. He was a member of the Brethren Church for a number of years.
The funeral will take place from his late home on Thursday at one o'clock, and at 1:30 o'clock at the Brethren Church, about a square west of the home, where preaching services will be conducted by Elders I. W. Taylor, of the Neffsville Home, and David Snader, of the local church. Interment will be made in the family plot in the cemetery adjoining Hess' Mennonite Church, midway between Rothsville and Lititz."
