| 60 | "The community of Tina was deeply shocked and grieved over the sudden and unexpected death of Victor M. Dickinson, a former well known and highly respected resident of this vicinity which occurred Wednesday morning about 7 o'clock at his home in Trenton, Missouri. Victor McKinley Dickinson, the youngest son of Charles T. and Elda Thomas Dickinson, was born March 24, 1900, in Carroll County, Missouri. The date set for his funeral services, March 24, would have been his fifty-seventh birthday. Mr. Dickinson was educated in the Carroll County schools and spent the greater portion of his life in the vicinity of Tina, Missouri. For a number of years he owned and operated a farm, upon which he had built a beautiful home, about one-half mile west of Tina. About one year ago he sold this property and he and his wife moved to Trenton, Missouri, where they purchased and operated the Sunset Motel. Prior to this he had been active in a number of business enterprises and was widely known throughout the area. His genial disposition made him a host of friends and he will be greatly missed in both business and social circles. On December 24, 1923, he united in marriage to Blanche Griffin of Tina, Missouri, who survives him. Other survivors are two brothers, Charles R. Dickinson of Carrollton, Missouri and Jacob N. Dickinson of Columbus, Kansas; two sisters, Delpha Dickinson and Alice Dickinson of DeRidder, Louisiana; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, a brother, Sumner T. Dickinson, and a half-sister, Mrs. Lena McCollum. Mr. Dickinson will be sadly missed by his devoted wife and by members of his family. Their memories of him will be of one who was never too busy in times of distress to put his own interests aside and contribute his assistance whenever it was needed. Funeral from the Clifford W. Austin funeral home, Tina, Missouri, Sunday, March 24th, 1957, 2:30 p.m. Rev. D. C. Dick, Maryville, Missouri. Burial Van Horn Cemetery near Tina." | 70 | (Burial location unknown -- Muddy Creek was the ancestral church and very likely where his parents were buried.) The subject arrived at Philadelphia on board the St. Andrew in Sep. 1737 as a young child. He remarried very quickly after the deaths of his 1st and 2nd wives, generating at least 15 children of whom 14 were still alive as of his death in 1792, "to wit, George STEVEN, eldest son, Christian, Philip, Michael, Casper, Dorothea (who since died under age & without issue), Henry, Eve, Emanuel, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary Catharine, Christiana & Abraham" (from records of the Orphans Court). | Steffy, George Adam I (I284522709423)
|
| 71 | (Burial location unknown -- Muddy Creek was the ancestral church of Catharine's husband and very likely where his parents were buried.) Judging from the birth dates of the last child by George Steffan's second wife and the first child by his third wife, the marriage must have taken place in 1776. The marriage took place at Cocalico Reformed Church ("PA Church Records", I, p.39), her father being Jacob Mötz probably from the large clan based at Raphno. Her father may well be the Jacob Metz of Earl Township on the 1790 and 1810 Census. As of George' Steffy's death in 1792 they were still living on the Lancaster side of Brecknock Township. Catharine was still alive as of the probate of George's estate in Orphan's Court in 1798. | Motz, Catharine (I284522709436)

| 72 | (Burial location unknown -- Muddy Creek was the Steffy church.) Michael Bingel's daughter married widower George Steffan at Muddy Creek Reformed Church on Mar. 22, 1768 (Wright, "Lancaster Co. Church Records", p.122). Children were born in 1771, 1774 and 1775, and Maria Dorothea was dead by the middle of 1776. They seem to have lived their whole marriage in the Adamstown area | Bingele, Maria Dorothea (I29373)

| 73 | (Burial location unknown -- Muddy Creek was where he and his family were repeatedly documented.) WIFE: Maria Elizabeth Weidner/Weidener c.1752-c.1827 Frederick’s birthdate of Mar. 6, 1750 found on many pedigrees arises from a misunderstanding of the documentation. In fact, the documentation places his birth in the range beginning Mar. 6, 1751 (as he was under 14 as of his guardianship hearing on Mar. 5, 1765) and ending July 8, 1752 (as he was already 15 as of his first communion on June 8, 1767). The death year of 1788 and death place of Sinking Spring, Berks Co. found on pedigrees also have no documentary basis. The final documents for Frederick are the 1783 tax roll and the 1786 state census both in Cocalico Tp., Lancaster Co. One might suspect Frederick relocated his family to Cumru Tp. of Berks Co. prior to his death, since that’s where his children turn up. However, there are no references to him past 1786, and furthermore it’s hard to imagine who “Widow Steffe” of Cocalico Tp. on the 1790 Federal Census could be other than Frederick’s widow (that is, if Lorentz was still alive as of 1790; see discussion on memorial #181707580). Jacob Remp, the father-in-law of Frederick’s son Abraham, could’ve been a factor in the relocation of Frederick’s children. CHILDREN: On the 1783 tax roll there were seven people in Frederick’s household. In addition to those five children, one more is known to have been born after 1783. (1) Peter b.c. 1772 [source?], m. Dec. 3, 1793 Rosina Roth (1776-1859). There are no obvious candidates for him anywhere after the 1800 and 1810 Censuses in Cumru. Some unsourced pedigrees give a death date of 8/6/1844; at any rate he was dead by the 1850 Census, when his wife Rosina was living with their son Peter Jr. The 1800 and 1810 censuses match his known children very well. Findagrave memorials are available for Daniel 1803-1874 #184215513, Elizabeth 4/1807-7/20/1883 #93415741 m. Holl, Maria 11/1/1809-1/4/1880 #86195871 m. Peter Ludwig, Peter Jr. 8/12/12-10/3/88 #40453231, but not for Isaac (9/8/97-after 1860 Census) nor Sally (b.10/89/94 still alive as of 1810). No memorials found for Peter, Rosina, Isaac or Sally. A Benjamin lived and died in 1806, and a boy died as a toddler in 1803. Most of their references come from the records of Schwarzwald Church near Reading. (2) Abraham [memorial #158928917] c.1773-after 1840 m. Elizabeth REMP (est 1775-after 1850) on 11/8/1796 at Schwarzwald church. Censuses in Berks Co. 1800-1840 (1810 not found). Thirteen living children are listed on an 1853 probate document; see the link to his memorial. (3) John Frederick b.4/24/1775 bapt. 5/14 at Muddy Creek Reformed (Wright LCCR I p.106). In 1800 he is on the PA Septennial Census and the Cumru tax roll. It's unclear whether he died shortly after 1800 or relocated, but there are no obvious candidates on any Federal Census. (4) Daniel b.9/2/1779 bapt. 10/10 at Muddy Creek Reformed (Wright LCCR I p.109), d.1824 per unsourced pedigrees). m. Elisabetha Reisch of Cumru at Schwarzwald (Wright LCCR Berks I 184) on 8/11/00. On the 1800-1830 censuses in Cumru Tp. a Daniel b.1775-1780 (all 4 appear to pertain to one person) has slots for 11 children. This is far more children than the son of Frederick is known to have had, and the Censuses have him still alive in 1830 when the unsourced pedigrees have the son of Frederick deceased in 1824. (The survival of the wife to 1830 is not necessarily a problem, as she could be a second wife -- in which case she may well be the mother of the children that debut on the 1830.) RESEARCH IN PROGRESS. (5) Catharine 4/19/1782 bapt. 5/5 at Muddy Creek Reformed (Wright LCCR I p.110). If “Widow Steffe” on the 1790 were Frederick Sr.’s, then the female living with her is likely to have been this Catharine. She MAY be the namesake #61628258 who married John Johnson (1779-1870) #61628259 and lived in Stark Co., OH, as there is a strong DNA match from a descendant of Philip of Hirschthal to a descendant of the Johnsons via their daughter Elizabeth (1806-55) #61729999 who married Peter Zerbe (1802-1869) #39152921. However, their is a discrepancy in the birthdates between the Muddy Creek baptism and the Stark County namesake that would need to be explained. (6) Joseph b. 5/14/1788 bap. 7/27 at Muddy Creek Reformed Church (Wright LCCR I p.114). The baptism is his only known reference. | Steffy, Frederick (I284522709518)

| 74 | (Burial location unknown -- Muddy Creek was where the family were repeatedly documented.) The patriarch's German-born wife Anna Barbara (nee Herzog) was still alive as of Feb. 5, 1744, but as of Mar. 24, 1751 his wife was a Magdalena. Surely Magdalena must've been the mother of Philip's final son Frederick, who was born between about April 1751 and June 1752. Thus, Michael (baptized Feb. 23, 1747) and Peter (born Oct. 29, 1749) aren't clearly linked to either woman, and it's unknown whether Anna Barbara died in 1744-1745, 1747-48, or in 1750. The largest gap is in one in 1744-45 making it the most likely, but that is not necessarily conclusive. Oddly enough, DNA matches haven't resolved the issue. One would expect the matches to Johan Philip & Barbara to have a different pattern than the matches to Johan Philip & Magadalena. However, the matches for a descendant of Philip Stephy show no distinction whatsoever: matches to descendants of George (Barbara 's son) show exactly the same range and average of cMs values as matches to Peter and Frederick. As for Magdalena's maiden name, it has been supposed to be "Horn" based upon her sponsorship of baptisms for the Horn family in 1751 and 1753. These actions may well reflect her being a Horn, but as a general principle this kind of inference is unreliable. Nor have DNA matches between Steffy and Horn arisen that would support it. For the moment the best description would be "Horn?". At death Johan Philip was married to a Dorothy who was appointed administrator of his estate on Feb. 25, 1765. (Lancaster Co. Court Bond Book #1 Page 410.) No evidence has been found for the date of their marriage, nor for the death of Magdalena. | Horn, Magdalena (I284522710439)
|
| 75 | (Burial location unknown -- Muddy Creek was where the family were repeatedly documented.) Johann Philip Steffen (c.1704-c.1765) and Annamaria Barbara (Herzog) were married in 1730, and in Sep. 1737 they and their sons George and Lorentz arrived at Philadelphia on board the St. Andrew. Soon after they settled permanently in the Adamstown area mostly attending Muddy Creek Union Church. Annamaria died some time between the birth of Michael in Feb. 1747 and early 1749 by which time Johann Philip had remarried. | Hertzog, Annamaria Barbara (I31438)

| 76 | (Grave as yet unlocated.) J. Philip Steffan's fourth son Peter was baptized in 1749, married to Elizabeth Scheleberger on Mar. 21, 1776, and baptized his own children John Nicholas Steffen (Feb. 3, 1777) and Elizabeth (May 25, 1780) -- all at Muddy Creek Union Church near Adamstown in northeastern Lancaster Co. A number of Internet sites claim that this this Peter Steffan is to be identified with a Peter Stevens who spent his later years near Altoona, and whose son Nicholas moved to Iowa late in his life. The documentary evidence to clinch this identification is lacking. However, it would now seem to be confirmed by DNA, as six matches have arisen between descendants of Peter Stevens of Altoona and a descendant of Johan Philip Steffan in a different line. The assertion that this Peter Steffan-Stevens is to be identified with a namesake in York Co., PA as of 1790 is far less certain and would appear to be unprovable. | Steffan, Peter (I31441)

| 78 | (Note: Her birth certificate lists her name as: Martha Chevya German) Martha was the 4th born of 6 children of a Russian-born father (Isaac German, 1881-1954) and Romanian-born mother (Leah Fisher, 1882-1953), both of whom emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1900's. Martha was the 3rd of the family's 3 girls. The family surname was changed to "Gorman" around the outbreak of World War I, so it would not be associated with the German people. Martha married Milton Moore Wasser on May 20, 1944 at the Central Presbyterian Church, Washington D.C. At the time, she was the Executive Secretary to the Chairman of the U.S. Railroad Retirment Board. Milton was an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army, assigned to an air defense artillery battery protecting the nation's Capitol. The couple had 4 children, all girls: 1) Marjorie Wasser (Isobe) 2) Shirley Wasser (Hamme) 3) Jean Marie Wasser (Saldutti) 4) Linda Irene Wasser (Vogestad) Martha died at age 96 from congestive cardiomyopathy; arteriosclerotic heart disease, and gastrointestinal bleeding. She was cremated. Her cremains were inurned at the Garden of Memories, Central Schwenkfelder Church, Worcester, Pennsylvania. | Gorman, Martha Sylvia (I18265)

| 79 | (Place of burial unknown; Muddy Creek was the family church, but he may well have died in New Jersey where his regiment was sent.) The subject arrived at Philadelphia on board the St. Andrew in Sep. 1837 as a young child. He grew up in East Cocalico Township, and in 1761 purchased land in the recently-laid-out Adamstown. There is no record of his marriage. After his father's death Lorentz purchased a farm in Brecknock Township. Lorentz' militia was mustered to the Jersey front on August 15, 1776 and nothing further is heard of him. However, the history of his regiment is known in pretty good detail. On Jul. 10, 1763 Lorentz and his wife baptized Anna Dorothea at Muddy Creek Reformed Church (Wright, "Lan. Co. Church Records", I p.96; on Dec. 26, 1766 he and wife Anna Catherine had a child they named Maria Barbara (Wright, p.98); a Susanna was born to them on Oct. 8, 1771 (Wright, p.103). Nothing has been discovered as to their life-spans or marriages. The maiden name of his wife is also unknown. The families that participated in his childrens' baptisms don't offer any suitable candidates for his wife. As for unexplained DNA links to people local to Muddy Creek, there are unexplained matches to descendants of the enormous Ream/Riehm family. Considering how scanty is the documentation for Lorentz's family, it is easily possible that he could have had several other children whose births aren't documented. By default Lorentz must be the father of Philip Steffy/Stephy (1765-1856), because Lorentz's brother George had a different Philip of his own (1765-1801) and Lorentz's three American-born brothers were all born too late to have sired this Philip. The Barbara Steffe who sponsored the baptism of Philip & Elizabeth's daughter Maria at Muddy Creek on Sep. 28, 1788 (Wright, p.114) is therefore likely to have been Lorentz's aforementioned daughter Maria Barbara. Perhaps more undocumented children of Lorentz remain to be discovered. It is normally assumed that Lorentz died during the war, since he is not recorded again after marching off from Adamstown. But another possibility is that he deserted and went into hiding. In 1830 a centenarian "Michael Steffy" suddenly turned up in Adamstown, and his claimed military activities match very close those associated with Lorentz Steffen's regiment. See memorial #181728459 for this other man, who may just be Lorentz Steffen in disguise. NOTE THAT IF LORENTZ DIED DURING THE WAR, THEN "WIDOW STEFFE" IN COCALICO TP. ON THE 1790 CENSUS IS LIKELY TO BE HIS. HOWEVER, IF LORENTZ AND HIS WIFE LEFT THE AREA IN 1778 (AS SUGGESTED ABOVE), THEN "WIDOW STEFFE" WOULD HAVE TO BE FREDERICK'S AS THERE IS NO OTHER CANDIDATE. THAT WOULD CLINCH THE SUSPICION THAT FREDERICK DIED IN COCALICO PRIOR TO 1790. | Steffy, Lorentz (I31439)

| 80 | (Place of burial unknown; the children were baptized at Muddy Creek and his second marriage took place there.) Catharine was the first of George Steffy's 3 wives. Nothing is known of her other than the births of her four boys -- George Adam 1763, Christian 1764, Philip 1765 and Michael in 1766 or 1767. She must have died during 1767 as George remarried in March 1768. | (Steffy), Catharine (I29370)

| 81 | (Reference: The Western Spirit, Paola, Miami Co., Kansas, Friday,October 31, 1890, page 3) "The death of Dr. G. W. Robinson at his home in Fontana on the 9th inst. takes from Miami county one of its best citizens. He had suffered for years with lung trouble and last month went to Colorado in the hope that he would be benefitted but no relief came and a brief period elapsed after his return when death relieved him. Dr. Robinson was born in Chester county, Penn., February 26, 1828, and married Miss Hannah M. Riggs in 1853. Later on he graduated in the Medical College in Keokuk, Iowa, and from there he moved with his family to Fontana where he practiced medicine. Four children were born to them, Lemuel H., who died many years ago, Vernon W., Sarah and Ella with their mother survive the good man now gone to the world of promise. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and an exemplary pillar in the Baptist church. A few years ago he was appointed Health Officer of Miami county, a position he held at the time of his death. The whole community mourns with the family over the departure of a useful and respected citizen." | Robinson, Dr George W (I27983)
